Green Your Halloween Costume

Green initiatives should be a part of your every day life, and that includes the holidays! To help go green this Halloween, we’re offering some of our tips on how to best green your costume.

How to green your halloween costumes

Use clothing and accessories you already have to make your costume.
An obvious answer to the greening of your Halloween costume: make your costume with items that you already own. Things like costume jewelry and old t-shirts can be a great way to create your own costume without having to purchase anything new that you may never wear again.

Do a costume swap.
The majority of people buy costumes each year, and those costumes add up to almost 6,520 TONS of waste per year. Instead of purchasing a brand new costume, try swapping with some friends or coworkers.

Thrift your way to a cool costume.
Another alternative to purchasing a new costume: try hitting the local thrift stores first. Stores like Goodwill and The Salvation Army are great places to find costumes at a reasonable price without adding to the waste accumulation each year.

Purchase a costume you can re-wear for Halloweens to come.
Let’s face it: there are some situations where a costume is just too funny to pass up! But instead of getting that costume that you can only wear once, try to find something that you can repurpose for the next year. A great example: an iPod costume. Instead of buying a new costume each year, you can update the song area to your favorite song since the previous Halloween.

These are our tips for greening your Halloween costume. Halloween is a great way to go green and get creative to make a costume that’s one-of-a-kind. Leave us a comment below and let us know how you plan to green your Halloween costume this year!

Don’t forget to be safe this Halloween, too!
