Lower your Stress and your Waste: Backup!

With the winter season quickly approaching, it’s important to keep in mind the unpredictable nature of the snowy season. With snow comes dangerous travel conditions, ice storms, and the general worry of how you will get your personal data back in the event a snowstorm knocks out your power.

With the winter weather in mind and all the possibilities that come with it, it’s important to remember to back up your information. Backing up your electronic data not only alleviates concern about losing your favorite home videos, photos, and important work documents, it also allows you to lower your waste.

Today, we’re offering some tips on how to backup your data and why it’s important:

Backup using an external hard drive.
Depending on your computer or mobile device, there are many different external hard drive options that may suit your needs. Most external hard drives come in a variety of sizes, so each one will allow you enough space to back up the entire contents of your computer. Alternatively, you can select which files and folders you would like to backup rather than backing up everything on your existing hard drive.

Backup using an online, cloud-based service.
A cloud-based service will, again, vary based on what type of service you select. A cloud service differs from a traditional external hard drive in that it will allow you to backup automatically, without having to connect the hard drive to your computer/tablet device. There are even some services that let you back up a friend’s computer.

It’s important to remember that backing up your devices also prevents waste. Rather than print all of your favorite photos, you can back them up for use at your convenience. The same goes for important receipts and documents that you may end up throwing away later!

Now that we’ve shared some different options for backing up your data, we want to hear from you. Leave us a comment below and let us know how you backup your devices. Do you prefer physical, hard drive storage or using an online could-based service?

Seems to me that a combination of both is sensible. I use the free version of Syncplicity, which automatically uploads files in my pre-defined folder, a flash drive which I carry around with me and two HDD, one on the laptop, the other external.
