If you’ve ever tried to eat local or go green in your daily diet, you know how difficult it can be to find a quality meal when traveling. Often, your travel dinner will consist of options like McDonald’s drive-thru rather than a green restaurant that offers recycling. To help ease your traveling woes over the holiday season, we’re offering a list of our top 5 green restaurants from across the US.

Boloco. Located mainly in Massachusetts but with locations throughout the East Coast, Bolocco offers a green dining environment. According to their website, they currently offer corn cups and bamboo bowls, as well as naturally-raised meat and organic tofu. They recycle and reuse building materials, and also have a composting program.

Candle 79. Located in the heart of New York City, Candle offers vegan and organic cuisine. As stated from their website, Candle uses energy efficient electrical and cooking equipment, eco-friendly paints and fabrics, and recycles everything from glass and plastic to grease used for cooking!

Greens Restaurant. Heading out to the West Coast? Well we have just the place for you to visit. Greens was built by San Francisco Zen Center carpenters and the restaurant incorporates 12 types of wood – from the massive black walnut doors and hickory stairs to the dining tables made from maple, walnut and cherry. Much of the wood has been recycled or reclaimed for use in the restaurant.

The Kitchen. Located in the beautiful Boulder, Colorado, The Kitchen is known for its participation in green practices. They support local farms throughout their produce purchasing process (say that five times fast)and supply a neighbor with cooking oil for use as biodiesel. On top of that, every day from 3:30 to 5 p.m., The Kitchen hosts a “community hour” featuring fairly priced food and drinks served in a communal setting.

Haven. And for the South: a Texas gem. Known for having a seasonal menu, Haven also houses a chef’s garden right on the property! According to their website, Haven also takes pride in hosting the Brookhaven Farmers Market each week.

    I find it hard to determine what type of eco material that is suitable for my home. I’ll probably check out the websites that you listed and browse the products that will fit my home. Thanks for this eco friendly suggestions!
