Safety Resolutions for 2012
As 2011 comes to a close, it’s time to start making resolutions for next year. Often times these resolutions revolve around workout routines, eating habits or budget decisions. However, we’d like to offer some home safety
resolutions — often times you don’t think about these things, but they’re important nonetheless.
So, in 2012, we encourage you to add one (or all) of these resolutions to your list:
Clean your fireplace – 36% of rural home fires are caused by heating malfunctions—Often times because of soot in chimneys and stove pipes. In 2012, have your fireplace, chimney and/or stovepipes cleaned by a professional.
Update your emergency preparedness kit – If you don’t have one, make one. If you do, make sure the batteries in your flashlights are still live and that everything is working properly. Check that any food you have stored is not expired, and if it is, replace it.
Check Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors – These should be on every floor of your home and, if possible, wired to talk to each other. If you have a home security company, they can likely assist you with this, as well as program to be alerted if these detectors go off—and call emergency services even if you aren’t home.
Get to know your neighbors – A trusted neighbor could be your best defense against criminal activity in your home. Make friends with those that live around you!
What are your 2012 resolutions?
