Mobile music apps: Eton’s top picks

You might have heard the phrase “there’s an app for that.” The fact of the matter is, there’s probably an app available for anything that interests you. In a mobile market that is constantly inundated with app noise (no pun intended), we’ve compiled a list of our favorite mobile music apps.

  • Spotify. Arguably one of the most popular apps of 2011, Spotify is a digital music service that gives you access to millions of songs. Spotify is available in both a free and paid version and features major and independent record labels. Add songs to your private or public playlists for your listening pleasure or add them to your friend’s or major brands’ lists.
  • Mog. Access over 14 million songs with a few clicks. There is no need to purchase music files, store them on your computer and sync to your every mobile device. With MOG, you get all the music (and share it, as well) where ever you are.
  • Last.fm. Last.fm offers an extensive library of music plus the ability to network with other users, serving as another social networks of sorts. Last.fm monitors your listening behavior, offers suggestions of bands you might equally enjoy and you habits are then shared with record labels. Big Brother, is that you?
  • Shazam. Point your mobile device to the general direction of the song in question and Shazam will tell you the song and artist name. As an added bonus, the latest version shows you the songs lyrics for an on the spot karaoke session.
  • Pandora. Find new artists based on your current preferences or simply use Pandora to jam to your favorites. Pandora also allows you to create custom stations artist, genre or even holiday!
  • SoundHound. Interested in making your own recording and sharing it with your friends, family or perfect strangers easily? This app gives you the opportunity to record and upload your own music to an array of social media channels.

Apple’s app store alone as over 500,000 apps available for free or purchase. Combine that number with the other thousands of apps for Blackberry, Windows Phone and Android and the numbers truly add up!
