New for 2012: Winter Storms to Be Named

In 2012, winter storms will be named by the Weather Channel to make it easier for people to discuss them on social media. That means, instead of simply discussing the serious snowfall or blizzard in your region, you’ll have a true-blue storm name to use, make a hashtag with, or tag in Facebook photos.

Some are critical of the fact that the Weather Channel will be naming storms of their own accord, and not with permission from the World Meteorological Association.
